Crowning Achievement Series- Sojourner Truth
The Crowning Achievement Series rolls on! This time we celebrate someone who left an incredible mark on the developing socio-political climate of the United States during the 19th century. Sojourner Truth, born in 1797, was a slave during her childhood. She managed to escape to freedom in 1826. Though she could not read or write, she became a powerful woman; fighting for the abolition of slavery and the rights' of women.
In 1828, Truth took a Caucasian man to court to recover her son. She won that case, effectively becoming the first African American woman to win a court case of this kind. We honor Sojourner Truth today by creating a crown made of the gavel. We acknowledge her bravery and determination to fight for the good of mankind with this crown.
